MONREALE AND CEFALU' TOUR |
 |
Established by the Phoenicians in the VII century a.C., with the name of Ziz (a flower), later it will be under the Roman rule. But the most prosperous period for the city was under the Arabian domination (IX a.C.) when it became one of the main Muslim centers in Occident.
In 1702, the city fell into Norman hands, led by Conte Ruggero, but the change was not brutal for merchants, artisans, and Muslims »»
(as well as for other religious and cultural groups), as they were allowed to live in the same way as they used to. This tolerance explains the spread of the “Arabian-Norman” style, which is a beautiful melting-pot of architectural and furnishings.
INFORMATION ABOUT MONREALE
It is famous for the wonderful Moresco-bizantino Dome (XII century). Monreale, from its position it dominates the “ gold reserve” and that is why Arabians built the Casale there. It was a very important place for the visitors in Monreale, the Cloister of the convent is one of the most recognizable Arabian constructions in the whole world.
INFORMATION ABOUT CEFALU'
It began as a fortified Greek outpost, about the end of the V century a.C., at the foot of the Rocca, where now there the modern historic center extends. The megalitic walls and the urbanistic structure recall the hellenistic-roman Cefalu. In the 858, it was conquered by the Arabians, and after this period Cefalu became a Norman city : the San Giorgio church, the Dome, the cloister and the Maria building, the Magno Osteria. The most important monument in Cefalu is surely the Arabian-norman Basilic-Cathedral.

| WHAT SEE MONREALE |
The Monreale Cathedral, called also
Santa Maria la Nuova Chiesa (the new church),
