| TOUR AGRIGENTO: THE ITINERARY |
The archaelogical museum of Agrigento which
keeps precious treasures; it’s the
most visited museum in the whole of Sicily.
The Ekklesiasterion, built around the IV
century was a place where citizens used to
discuss about the problems of the city.
The side of the Cathedral that still keeps
elements of the original building (single
lancet windows XI century) was built by the
Normans.
San Nicola’s church was built in the XIII century by Cistercians.
It is made in tufa, in a style of both Roman and Gothic elements. The ashlars
employed were from the Cave of Giants, commonly called The Temple of Zeus, which
had an endless source of materials.
The Temples valley.
The Giunone temple (Hera Lacinia), dedicated to the homonymous greek patron of
marriage and birth was build in the 5th century b.C. and burnt by Carthaginians
in 406. It was the temple where weddings were celebrated.
The Concordia Temple. You can better appreciate its beauty, because it’s
the most well preserved temple
The Eracle temple, the most ancient, dedicated to god Eracle (or Ercole), the
most respected by the Akragas habitants.
The Olympic Zeus Temple ( Jupiter), built in honour of the homonymous god after
the victory of 480 b.C. against Carthaginians.
The Dioscuri Temple ( Castor and Pollux) is the emblem of Agrigento, built to
honour the Spartans and the twin sons of Jupiter. There are just four pillars
left now.
Volcano Temple is of the V century as well, it’s the most ruined temple.
The Esculapio Temple ( Asciepio), far away from the city, was a place often visited
for pilgrimages..
The Necropoli Paleocristiana is just down the street and it is dug in the rocks,
not far away from the old city. There are many kind of burials (loculus like),
as in many catacombs.
The Sacrificing altar was dedicated only for important sacrifices. It was possible
to sacrifice up to 100 oxes at a time.
Terone’s grave was wrongly thought to be the tyrant’s tomb, but it
dates back to the time of Roman rule and built to honour the soldiers who
lost their life in the second punic war. |
